Interview with Paul, a student trainee who was subsequently taken on as a permanent employee

What made you decide to apply to us as a student trainee?

The main reason for me applying as a student trainee at Erzkontor was to the opportunity to gain work experience while I was studying IT at university. Since I had already come into contact with data processing during my training and studies, I was very keen to apply these skills in practice. The corporate strategy road#2024PLUS sparked my interest in getting actively involved in digitalization processes. I also really liked a lot of what the company had to offer in general, in particular the bonuses, the colleagues and the central location.

What tasks were you assigned as a student trainee and what was a typical working week like for you?

As a student trainee I had very flexible hours so as to make sure I didn’t neglect the requirements of my degree course. I worked 20 hours a week, mostly three days, depending on my semester schedule. The working environment was very friendly and people placed a lot of trust in me, so I was able to work independently, identify problems and design and implement solutions. My tasks initially included data evaluation and analysis. Later on I did the typical assignments of a data scientist and data engineer. This included creating data bases and concepts for product analyses and data evaluations.

How did the student trainee job help you progress?

Working as a student trainee helped me in several ways. As a result of my hands-on work with data and tools, I was able to consolidate my digital data processing skills. In addition, my student traineeship gave me the opportunity to register and complete my bachelor’s thesis in the company. This thesis focused on database development, performance analysis and web programming. As a result I was not only able to successfully complete my studies but also lay the foundations for an important digitalization step in the company.

How did your career progress after graduating from university?

After completing my studies, I was able to transition smoothly from my student trainee job to a permanent position. In doing so, I had the opportunity to pick up and expand on the activities I’d previously taken on as a student trainee. I continue to be involved in numerous projects and can actively participate in the development of new concepts and solutions. It’s a continuous process in which the work and responsibilities I take on are evolving.
